What is a CMP?

Here is our guide to how a Consent Management Platform (CMP) works and how it helps you stay compliant with data privacy regulations such as GDPR and CCPA.

In short, a Consent Management Platform acts as a mediator between a website visitor and the services* on the website that might collect their personal data via cookies for various reasons such as marketing, social sharing and statistics.
What is a CMP?
As the TRUENDO CMP loads before the services on the website do, it automatically scans for, and intercepts data collection.
Cookies A cookie is a small text file that stores your settings when you surf the web. When you return to the website with the same device and using the same browser, the cookie information gets sent to the website to improve your surfing experience. Cookies also give you information about what people click on, what they read etc., so for marketing and sales purposes they are important.

consent
To consent is for a visitor to give permission to the website to collect their personal data. You have to ask for consent unless the reason is based on a necessary purpose e.g. “statistics” or “marketing”, which you must inform visitors about.

While cookies that are required for your website to function properly can be set automatically, your website must provide an “opt-in” and “opt-out” for other non-essential cookies. This means that visitors can choose freely to share specific data (opt-in) or not (opt-out)
as possible, and it should be equally as convenient for them to

With the unique visitor’s ID that is generated by the CMP, visitors can request to view and obtain a copy of their consent records from the website owner anonymously. Not only does this provide proof for the website owner of given consent, it also facilitates trust between an organization and its website visitors.

A CMP should also be up-to-date with the latest regulations and update the privacy policy of its correlating website accordingly. The TRUENDO CMP does so automatically on a regular basis.
